Sky

Auckland‘s CBD is large and ever changing. Nature, and its influence, is becoming less and less apparent. In the heart of our city, there are small attempts to bring nature back. Trees sprout from footpaths and concrete gardens are planted amidst pedestrian walkways. Even the sky, that one remaining constant of nature, is becoming mere background to the upward push of the city. This is especially true at night when the sky darkens and city lights take centre stage.

A Pre-Visualization of Sky for Auckland Festival, AK07

Sky uses the airspace directly over the tree ferns planted at the Queen Street end of Vulcan Lane. A screening cloth creates a projection canopy, a false ceiling of sorts, onto which four data projectors rear project images of a daytime sky. Clouds drift past. Birds fly through. The audience experiences a beautiful sunny day in the darkness of the city night.
